News - 16th September 2008

Just to let you know how I did at the weekend on my 100 mile bike ride challenge over the South Downs Way.

I started but unfortunately did not complete the 100 miles. I managed 60 miles in total so still have 40 miles to do. I only fell off my bike once and have the bruises to prove it.

We started off from Winchester at 6.00am with good weather but unfortunately the night before it had rained which made the ground rather muddy to say the least which wasn’t the best start I had hoped for.

I am preparing again to complete my final 40 miles early in the New Year and will let you know the date and when it has been completed.

My body is in recovery and hurting.

A personal letter from the Managing Director, Robin Hathaway, setting out the challenge:-

Dear Sir/Madam

My name is Robin Hathaway and I am asking you not to throw me in your waste bin yet as there is something I would like to tell you.

At the age of 43, 5 years ago I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration and without the support and treatment offered by the Sussex Eye Hospital I would have definitely lost centre vision in both eyes.

At my Companies Christmas Party in 2007 I set myself a challenge to cycle 100 miles and thought it would be a great way of fund raising to try and raise as much money as possible for the Sussex Eye Hospital to enable them to purchase much needed equipment.

The day is set for Sunday 14th September 2008 for Richard Frost, my cycling buddy and I to take to the saddle and cycle from Winchester to Eastbourne (100 miles), the full length of the South Downs Way. My goal is to complete it in a day, unlike Richard who could easily complete it in ½ day. (Richard cycles regularly all over the world and is extremely fit, unlike myself…..I have had to put in many hours of training)

Along with sponsorship and donations from family and friends we are also organising additional fund raising events and will be holding a Silver Ball later in the year which is all about putting on your best dress/suit, having fun, auctions, raffles, games and dancing the night away.

Some of the Specialist equipment needed to treat patients is purchased through Charity Funding or Donations. If you would like to help in raising funding by either a donation or a gift that you feel would be suitable for one of our auctions or raffles, it would be very much appreciated and welcomed.

MD @ Sussex Eye Hospital

Spot - Light is headed by a patient at the Sussex Eye Hospital where he is treated for MD. Without the support and treatment offered by the Sussex Eye Hospital this patient would have most definitely lost his centre vision in both eyes.

Spot - Light is holding the listed fund raising events to try and raise as much money as possible so that we can give something back to the Eye Hospital.

At the end of the fund raising campaign we hope to be in a position to purchase much needed equipment for the Eye Consultants at the Hospital.

Macular degeneration (MD) is a common eye disease that causes deterioration of the macula, the central area of the retina, the paper-thin tissue at the back of the eye where light-sensitive cells send visual signals to the brain. Sharp, clear, “straight ahead” vision is processed by the macula. Damage to the macula results in the development of blind spots and blurred or distorted vision. When the macula becomes damaged, many daily activities such as driving and reading become increasingly difficult..
